Cartier Icons: Santos de Cartier

Categories:Other Brands

Google ‘world’s first wristwatch’ and depending on which page you land on, you’ll read at least 3 different stories from 3 distinct brands claiming that theirs was indeed the first. And while there’s no way to verify which has the more accurate story, no one can argue that the Santos de Cartier is the most enduring of them all since its creation back in 1904. A true icon in its own right, it was created specially for famed Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont, who told Louis Cartier he needed a better way to tell time while he was in flight.

The rest, as they say, is history, and walk into any Cartier boutique today and you’ll find two lines of the Santos watch that’s still in production. The first, the Santos-Dumont, has a collection of watches that are similar in design to the one the Brazilian aviator wore, while the Santos 100 is the thicker, sportier model that comes with exposed screws.

As for myself, I’ve always been a fan of the Santos 100, and having it tried it more than once, I’m still drawn to its geometric shape accented with exposed screws. One of those rare pieces that won’t look out of place on your wrist whether you’re dressed up or down, the Santo 100 now comes in variety of finishes, from full steel case and bezel, to another in full steel adorned with a 18K yellow gold bezel. Then there is the latest iteration, the Santos 100 in all-black ADLC that’s shown above.

And if you want to know the one I’ve set my heart one, it’s this, the Santos 100 steel that makes my heart beat ever so quickly whenever I lay eyes on it. A beautiful beast of a timepiece, I’ll just have to cough out theSGD9600 needed to bring this baby home and wear for a long, long time. After all, if has been around for 113 years, this true icon will have no problem being relevant (and sought after) for a hundred more.

Cartier: It’s Time For A New LOVE

Categories:Jewelry & Watches

It’s a situation most of us are familiar with. There’s something that we love and don’t really mind putting good money down for, but something about it holds us back. And in the case of Cartier’s LOVE bracelet, the more practical amongst you have lamented that because of the way it was designed, taking it off (and subsequently putting it back on) can be quite a hassle, especially when one is alone, and trying to do it all with the specially designed screwdriver is a pain. There, I said it.

With this premise in mind, I’ve got good news. Fans of the Cartier’sLOVE bracelet can now look forward to the newly redesigned LOVE 2.0(that’s what I’m calling it anyway). Instead of needing to unscrew both sides of the bracelet to open it, you now only need to do it to one side, with the other side supported by a new hinge-clasp that’s incorporated into the design.

Also, LOVE 2.0 is more sleek, with bracelets and rings made thinner than the current ones. What does that mean? Well, besides being able to stack more on the same wrist (because who doesn’t love a Cartier #wristparty, right?), it’s also priced much lower. So instead of paying SGD8650 for your regular entry-level models, you’ll only be paying SGD5600 for the new LOVE 2.0 bracelet, with only a slight difference to the way they both look when put side by side. In other words, two-thirds of the price but still looking like a million bucks, which is win-win if you ask me.

To be made available in Singapore at Cartier Ngee Ann City from early December 2016 (and the rest of the Cartier boutiques in Singapore from January 2017), you’ll really have no reason not to anymore. Really.

Update – Cartier Envelope Bag

Categories:Other Brands

cartier_envelope-bag-collectionI first blogged about the upcoming Cartier Envelope Bag on Valentine’s Day (apt too, given how Cartier is on love and all things romantic), and now it’s time for a quick update.

Just released in Singapore, it’s now time for you to head down to Cartier boutiques island-wide and check out the gorgeous full-leather bags, which will make great shoulder slings for day and clutches by night. Priced at SGD1845 each, the 24 cm by 17 cm bags come in 3 colours, including Red, Mahogany (shown above), as well as Black.

Designed to look like an envelope, it will remind you of love letters received past and present. More importantly, it reinforces Cartier as the purveyor of all things love, which I do think is clever, and sweet.

Cartier Love Ring In Ceramic, Diamonds & Gold

Categories:Jewelry & Watches

cartier_love-ring-ceramic-diamonds-goldAlready an icon in its own right, writing most anything about Cartier’s Love collection would be pointless since it’s already loved and adored by one and all. But because this post concerns Cartier’s new Love ring in ceramic, diamonds and gold, I thought it apt to run it here.

Recently released in Singapore and already garnering fans of its own, what’s most special about the new rings is the fact that they can be worn together or separately. Yes, you guessed it, the ring is actually comprised of 3 individual pieces, and as the name suggests, one band in the gold of your choice (pink, or white gold), another band in ceramic (black, or brown ceramic) and lastly, a third band in gold that’s also set with sparkling diamonds.

Priced at SGD7150 and SGD7600 (the one in white gold is a tad pricier), it’s like getting 3 rings for the price of one. Or one ring that actually comes apart and makes 3. Seriously, I’m delirious, so please excuse me while I go fan myself.

cartier_love-bracelet-rose-gold-diamondsFor those of you who like me, feel that such delicate rings just don’t sit pretty enough on your fingers, you could consider the Cartier Love Bracelet in pink gold and set with diamonds. Priced at SGD18,500 for a total of 10 diamonds encircling the circumference of the bracelet, the icing on the cake is probably the fact that it comes with its very own solid gold screwdriver that you’ll need to put on or take off the bracelet.

Personally, I’ll be content with the plain yellow gold one (sans diamonds, of course) that sells for SGD7740, but that’s just me. What are you eyeing next from Cartier?

Cartier: The Panther

Categories:Jewelry & Watches

cartier_panthere-collection1As a longstanding icon, and as the signature animal of the house, there’s no denying the importance of this majestic beast to Cartier, having first made its appearance back in 1914, its fur the inspiration for the setting of gems on a wristwatch. With the arrival of Jeanne Toussaint (herself nicknamed ‘La Panthère’), she worked closely with Louis Cartier and created exquisite pieces for the house, from powder boxes to cigarette cases and even bag clasps in the shape of a prowling panther, before moving on to jewellery pieces like bracelets, brooches and necklaces for the likes of the Duchess of Windsor who completed her collection with 3 beautifully commissioned pieces.

And after you’re done watching the short animation detailing the 100 year history of the panther at Cartier, you’ll be better able to appreciate the over 50 new jewellery pieces created to mark its centenary, from rings to brooches and necklaces to earrings and bracelets.

cartier_panthere-collection6Take this exquisite piece, for instance. Requiring some 330 hours of meticulous craftsmanship, it depicts the panther prowling on the great dome of the Grand Palais, the delicate white gold lattice intricately adorned with diamonds, emeralds and rock crystals. The panther’s ‘fur’ comprises diamonds and onyx, each specially cut and fitted to give it ‘life’, which is only something you’ll be able to experience if you were to see it in person. Commanding, assertive, yet feminine, this one’s for the woman who lives life to the fullest with an eye always set on the finer details.

cartier_panthere-collection2And then there are the more playful pieces, a touch of mischief without lacking in grace. Featuring the panther ‘wrapped’ around itself (the bracelet and the ring featured at the top), along with the bracelet at the bottom which shows clearly the ‘fur’, its 3D body clearly showing off its graceful lines and muscular body.

cartier_panthere-collection3And then there’s my personal favourite, the architectural and futuristic ring that features a panther head carved out of solid gold. Sitting beautifully on your finger with your own skin colour as a stark contrast to the chiseled precious metal, the piercing eyes (emeralds for the eyes with a touch of onyx for the nose) the perfect embellishments to this majestic piece. And it’s a piece of panther legacy I wouldn’t mind having in my own collection.

You can view the over 50 pieces for yourself online via Cartier, with detailed descriptions, image close-ups and prices in SGD accompanying each piece. Or head down to any Cartier boutique for your close encounter with this magnificent  beast and experience its ‘fur’ for yourself.

Cartier Louis Cartier Fine Leather Goods Collection

Categories:Other Brands

cartier_louis-cartier-flg-collection1You’ve already read (and seen) most of Cartier’s new Jeanne Toussaint Fine Leather Goods collection, from my favourite Jeanne Toussaint Asymmetric Clutch to the other pieces in the collection, including the Jeanne Toussaint Chain Bag and the totes which come in 2 sizes.

But enough about the ladies, here’s something just for the boys. Besides creating a collection in homage to Jeanne Toussaint, Creative Director of Accessories Marlin Yuson also drew on another legend of the house, Louis Cartier, for the new mens collection. The man who started it all, the collection is dedicated to his genius, one who dreamt of faraway adventures and the spirit of travel.

cartier_louis-cartier-flg-collection2Which brings us to the key bag of this collection, the Louis Cartier Bag, an elegant tribute to the man and his wanderlust. Made of caramel-coloured full-grain leather, it takes over five square metres of it, along with fifteen metres of thread and over 100 steps to create it. Measuring 49.5 cm across by 25 cm in height, the barrel-shaped duffel is beautifully finished with palladium-finished hardware, from its sleek side buckles to the tiniest of logos on the top of the bag, taken from the archives and given new life in this exquisite piece.

cartier_louis-cartier-flg-collection3Another bag that’s worth checking out is this accompanying piece, the Louis Cartier Document Holder, which employs the same craftsmanship and level of detailing dedicated to the former. 40 cm across by 29.5 cm, the briefcase comes in two colours (Black and Caramel), with a bevy of pockets and slots on the inside, and is guaranteed to make even the most disorganised of businessmen weep with joy. Priced at SGD5100and SGD4350 respectively for the bags, you’ll find both, along with some other pieces including a messenger and a portfolio clutch at Cartier boutiques islandwide.

Luxe, polished and sleek. It’s true what everyone’s been saying, Cartier’s bags are really coming into their own now.
